The Journey to Employee Engagement

Lisa Nichols' journey into employee engagement began with her extensive experience in coaching leaders across various industries. Through her conversations, she identified a common challenge: employees feeling disconnected or unengaged. This realization drove her to focus on creating environments where employees feel supported, valued, and empowered to do their best work.

Creating Safe Spaces
Psychological safety is a cornerstone of employee engagement. Employees need to feel safe to express their ideas without fear of repercussions. This safety fosters creativity and innovation, as people are more likely to contribute valuable insights when they know they are respected and their opinions matter.

For Lisa, the drive to improve employee engagement stems from a belief that everyone deserves a career they don’t want to escape from. Addressing Unique Challenges in Higher Education

Higher education institutions face unique challenges in employee engagement. These include hierarchical structures, siloed departments, and communication breakdowns. These issues can hinder the flow of ideas and create barriers between different levels of the organization.

Breaking Down Hierarchies

To position themselves as employers of choice, colleges and universities must invest in fostering genuine connections among their faculty and staff. This involves creating opportunities for collaboration, flattening hierarchical structures, and ensuring clear, consistent communication.

Building Authentic Relationships
Investing time and energy in building relationships during the workday helps create a sense of unity and purpose. This can be achieved through initiatives like pairing employees on projects or organizing regular check-ins.

Flattening Hierarchies
