Scott Cline on Handling Criticism [Lessons in Leadership]

Or listen on:

About the Episode

In this episode, Carrie and Scott Cline delve into the art of managing criticism as a leader. Whether the feedback is constructive or difficult to hear, Scott provides actionable advice on how to pause, reflect, and respond thoughtfully. Leaders at all levels will benefit from this conversation on reframing feedback as a positive sign of progress and a chance to improve.

Episode Highlights

Why Should Leaders Reframe Criticism?

Scott highlights that receiving criticism often means you’re taking action and leading effectively. Criticism isn’t always about failure—it’s a signal that you’ve caught someone’s attention and are making an impact. Reframing criticism in this way allows leaders to see feedback as an opportunity to move from “good to great,” as Carrie aptly puts it.

How to Respond to Criticism Without Reacting Emotionally?

When faced with criticism, Scott advises leaders to pause and breathe. Taking time to reflect on feedback before responding helps ensure that your reaction is thoughtful and measured. He stresses the importance of active listening, asking clarifying questions, and avoiding defensive responses, even in emotionally charged situations.

What to Do After Receiving Feedback?

Not all feedback requires immediate action—or any action at all. Scott encourages leaders to reflect calmly and decide on the next steps after the fact. Sometimes the best decision is to do nothing with the feedback. However, if the criticism resonates deeply, it may point to an area worth exploring further.
