About the Episode:

Welcome to AI for Yield Season, a special mini-series of The Application! Each episode is short (less than 10 minutes!) and packed with actionable insights to help enrollment professionals use AI effectively during one of the busiest times of the year.

In this first episode, Allison breaks down what AI can and can’t do for you. She shares real-world scenarios where AI can help speed up your outreach, personalize student interactions, and save time—without losing the human touch.

Key "How-Tos" You'll Learn in This Quick Episode:

Use AI to Draft (But Not Replace) Personalized Emails – Speed up your writing while keeping it personal.
Leverage AI for Smarter Student Meeting Prep – Summarize key student details in seconds.
Know AI’s Limits – AI can’t replace human connection or strategic decision-making.
Get Started with AI Today – Try simple, free AI tools with no complex setup required.
Balance Efficiency with Authenticity – Use AI to handle repetitive tasks so you can focus on real conversations.

How Can AI Improve Email Outreach?

One of the most time-consuming tasks during yield season is email outreach. Whether you’re following up with students who attended Accepted Students Day or sending reminders about financial aid deadlines, crafting individualized emails at scale can be overwhelming. AI tools like ChatGPT or Grammarly can generate email drafts in seconds based on simple prompts. For example, you can ask AI to write a friendly follow-up email to a student interested in the business program.

However, AI-generated emails often sound generic. The secret to success? Add your personal touch. Instead of using an AI draft as-is, tweak it to reflect your voice, incorporate specific details about the student, and make it feel like it was written just for them. AI should speed up the process, not replace the human element. When done right, personalized AI-assisted emails help cut down on busy work while still making students feel valued.

Can AI Help Prepare for Student Meetings?

For enrollment professionals juggling multiple student interactions, AI can be a game-changer in meeting preparation. Instead of manually scanning a student’s file, AI can summarize key details and suggest talking points. For example, if a student is interested in biology and attended Admitted Students Day, AI might highlight their interest in research opportunities and whether they plan to live on campus.

Having this structured overview allows you to enter meetings more prepared, ensuring your conversations feel personal and engaging. But remember, AI can only provide a starting point—it’s your expertise and ability to connect on a personal level that will make the conversation meaningful. AI can set the stage, but you bring the warmth and authenticity that truly influence a student’s decision.

What Are AI’s Limitations in Enrollment Marketing?

AI is a powerful assistant, but it has clear limitations. While it can help generate content, analyze data, and provide recommendations, it lacks the emotional intelligence needed to build real connections. As Allison emphasizes, students choose a college based on how supported and valued they feel. No AI-generated email or chatbot conversation can replace the impact of a genuine human interaction.

Additionally, AI can’t make strategic decisions for you. It might provide insights on which students are most engaged or suggest outreach tactics, but ultimately, you know your student audience best. AI should be used to enhance efficiency, not replace critical thinking and relationship-building. By embracing AI as a tool—not a substitute—you can work smarter while keeping the student experience at the center.

Try It for Yourself: Simple Ways to Start Using AI During Yield Season

Want to explore AI without feeling overwhelmed? Here are three easy ways to start integrating it into your workflow:

  1. Use AI for Drafting Emails – Test out AI writing tools like ChatGPT to create email templates. Experiment with different prompts to see how AI can generate content that saves you time, then personalize it for each student.
  2. Leverage AI for Meeting Prep – Before a student meeting, use AI to summarize key details and suggest conversation topics. Compare the AI-generated summary with your usual prep process and see what works best.
  3. Keep It Human – AI is your assistant, not your replacement. The more time you save on administrative tasks, the more time you have to foster real connections with students. Prioritize authenticity over automation.
