Nicole Blackwell on Embracing Failure [Lessons in Leadership]

Nicole Blackwell on Embracing Failure [Lessons in Leadership]

Or listen on:

About the Episode

Carrie welcomes Nicole Blackwell to discuss a common but critical topic in leadership: failure. Nicole shares her personal experience with a leadership setback and emphasizes the importance of adaptability and self-awareness. This conversation provides essential insights on how leaders can align their skills with the needs of an organization and turn setbacks into growth opportunities.

Key Takeaways:

  • Adaptability is crucial in leadership, especially in changing environments.
  • Aligning personal strengths with organizational needs is key to long-term success.
  • Self-awareness and proactive skill development can help prevent future setbacks.

What leadership failure did Nicole experience, and what did she learn?
Nicole reflected on a pivotal moment in her leadership journey when she transitioned from a sales role to a sales trainer after earning her master's degree. She was excited to take on this new position, but soon realized that the company needed trainers for not only sales but also billing and technical support—areas in which she had no experience. As demand for sales training diminished, her value to the team decreased, eventually leading to her being laid off. This experience taught her a valuable lesson: adaptability is essential. Nicole realized that her failure stemmed from not assessing the full scope of the organization's needs and how she could expand her skill set to contribute in multiple areas.

How can leaders apply this lesson to their teams?
Carrie and Nicole agreed that leaders must not only understand their own skill sets but also recognize the intersection between what they bring to the table and what the organization needs. Carrie pointed out that leaders often fail to sit down with their employees and ask, "What are your goals, and how can we align those with the needs of the organization?" By creating an environment where individuals can learn new skills that benefit both themselves and the organization, leaders can foster growth, engagement, and mutual success.
