Mike Barzacchini on Embracing Failure [Lessons in Leadership]

Or listen on:

About the Episode

Carrie is joined by Mike Barzacchini to explore how leaders can adapt and learn from failure. Mike reflects on a significant experience where his enthusiasm for a project did not align with a new president's expectations, offering key insights into balancing tasks with relationship-building in leadership. The discussion highlights the importance of alignment with senior leadership and maintaining enthusiasm tempered with thoughtful communication.

Key Takeaways:

  • Building relationships with senior leadership is essential, especially during transitions.
  • Enthusiasm must be balanced with clear communication and understanding of institutional goals.
  • Successful leadership requires both focus on tasks and maintaining strong, strategic relationships.

What leadership failure did Mike experience, and what did he learn?
Mike recalled a time when his enthusiasm for a national marketing campaign didn’t resonate with his new college president. The president had just transitioned into the role, and Mike was eager to share an exciting project, assuming the president would be equally thrilled. However, the president wasn’t yet familiar with the institution’s marketing goals or the partnership behind the campaign, leading to a disconnect. Mike learned two critical lessons from this experience: first, the importance of staying in sync with senior leadership, especially during transitions, and second, the need to balance his natural enthusiasm with strategic communication.

How can leaders balance tasks and relationships in their roles?
Carrie highlighted the idea that leadership requires balancing both the task itself and the relationship-building process. Mike’s experience illustrated how focusing too much on one—such as the project at hand—can lead to a breakdown if relationships aren’t also nurtured. Successful leadership involves creating alignment between the tasks being executed and the relationships that support those tasks. Leaders must ensure they’re fostering strong connections with colleagues and senior leadership while also delivering on strategic goals.
