Anthony Robinson on Handling Criticism [Lessons in Leadership]

Or listen on:

About the Episode

Criticism can be challenging to hear, but how you respond can make all the difference in your growth as a leader. In this candid conversation, Anthony Robinson shares his personal journey of learning to handle criticism with empathy and intentionality. By reframing feedback as an opportunity for connection and improvement, leaders can build trust and foster a culture of continuous growth.

Episode Highlights

Why is Empathy Essential When Receiving Criticism?

Anthony emphasizes the importance of empathy in understanding where criticism comes from. Whether it’s constructive or difficult to hear, criticism requires bravery and trust from the person providing it. Recognizing this helps leaders approach feedback with grace and understanding rather than defensiveness.

What’s the Role of Follow-Up in Handling Criticism?

Listening is crucial, but what comes next matters even more. Anthony shares that acting on feedback and circling back to the person who provided it strengthens trust and shows that you value their input. Without this step, you risk closing the door to future feedback, which is essential for personal and professional growth.

How Can Leaders Reframe Criticism for Growth?

Anthony recommends adopting the mindset of The Four Agreements, specifically the principle of "don’t take things personally." By detaching emotionally and viewing feedback as a growth opportunity, leaders can focus on improving their skills and building stronger connections with their teams.
